Bluegrass Dragger By J.R. Janicek

Though there are many styles or themes in which you can build a truck, styles change over time, so the best advice is to remember the term KISS: Keep It Simple Stupid; and it might be the most important thing to remember when building a custom truck.

A perfect example of an application of the "KISS Rule" is Arville Perry's 1993 Chevy Silverado. Arville wanted to have a clean custom hauler for the soul purpose of draggin' some ass in the Bluegrass State, that is, his home state of Kentucky. This is a clean truck and it has everything done just right. It's one thing to paint a truck in a single color, but if that color isn't the right one the vehicle may go unnoticed. Sporting Nissan 350Z Daytona blue paint, Arville's truck doesn't have that problem!

The mono-tone blue paint scheme coats the clean bodywork that was done to simplify the exterior of the truck. Arville's truck is shaved clean including the third brake light, door handles, tailgate handle, antenna, and taillights. After the rest of the body was smoothed, a set of aftermarket Street Scene mirrors were bolted into place. The bed received a welded-in steel roll pan with Caddy taillights since the factory taillights had been shaved and custom wheel tubs along with a spray-in bedliner. The shaved tailgate was also modified with a molded-in LED third brake light. The older-style Chevy original front clip was updated with one from a 1999 Cadillac Escalade fitted with billet grille insert.

Per the "draggin' ass in the bluegrass" mission statement, Arville's truck was setup to lay the frame flat on the ground--perfectly. To raise it up to a drivable height, an adjustable air ride suspension was installed with airbags at each corner which are filled with air via a 12-gallon tank and an Air Lift engine driven compressor. Other chassis mods include Belltech drop spindles under the nose and a Suicide Doors 4-link in the rear with c-notched frame and custom bridge. Completing the truck's stance are a set of 20-inch chrome Dit Assail wheels wrapped in 245/35/20 Raptor ZR tires.

One of the coolest mods on Arville's Silverado is the all sheet metal dash. Arville wanted to throw people off when they looked inside the cab, plus he really likes the look of a clean painted to match dash. A 7-inch Pyle LCD monitor was grafted into place on the passenger side along with an Alpine CD headunit. The rear seat was removed and a custom painted and carpeted fiberglass box fills the void which is stuffed with four 10-inch Memphis Audio subs powered by a 1,000 watt Memphis Audio amp. Finishing the interior, the stock seats were replaced with 2001 Chevy Silverado seats wrapped in black leather and the door panels were upholstered to match the seats. Then the little details like the installation of black GM carpet, a new headliner, center cosnole, and painting all the plastics to match the exterior were tackled.

Under the hood, Arville's stock 350ci engine received plenty of paint, a high flow air filter, and chrome valve covers. To help the engine breathe a little better, a Flowmaster dual exhaust was installed.

After 12 years of owning and customizing various rides, Arville has hit a home run with his "bluegrass dragger" and by following the KISS principle; he has ensured that his truck will remain an in-style Kentucky reflector collector for years to come!
